The Padres (39-32) defeated the Cincinnati Reds (35-32) by a score of 6-4 in the first game of four at Petco Park. Joe Musgrove (4-6, 2.28) pitched seven shutout innings, giving up four hits and three walks with two strikeouts. In the ninth inning, Kyle Farmer singled to drive in Joey Votto, Scott Heineman scored on a single by Tyler Stephenson, and Jonathan India hit a two-run home run.
Wade Miley (6-4, 2.88) allowed two runs on four hits and two walks while striking out five over seven innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Manny Machado hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. In the ninth inning, Machado scored on Eric Hosmer‘s two-run home run and Victor Caratini hit a walk-off two-run home run with Jake Cronenworth on base.
