The Padres (76-73) were swept by the St Louis Cardinals (79-69), losing the finale of their three-game series at Busch Stadium by a score of 8-7. Jake Arrieta (5-14, 7.39) allowed five runs (four earned) on three hits and a walk with no strikeouts before leaving after one out in the first inning with a right adductor strain. Tommy Edman scored when Nolan Arenado reached on a Fernando Tatis Jr. fielding error, Paul Goldschmidt scored on Dylan Carlson‘s sacrifice fly, Edmundo Sosa double to drive in Tyler O’Neill, and Harrison Bader doubled to drive in Arenado & Sosa in the first inning. O’Neill singled to drive in Goldschmidt and Sosa doubled to score O’Neill in the fifth inning. Carlson singled in the seventh inning to drive in O’Neill.

J.A. Happ (9-8, 6.02) gave up three runs on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts in four innings. Tatis Jr. singled to score Adam Frazier in the third inning. Manny Machado scored on a ground out by Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers singled to drive in Austin Nola in the fourth inning. Tommy Pham hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.
