The Padres (34-37) scored fewer runs, 14-8, than the Colorado Rockies (37-33) in the third game of their four-game series at Coors Field. Eric Lauer (5-6, 4.60) gave up five runs on ten hits and two walks with two strikeouts in two and two-thirds innings. Charlie Blackmon scored on a David Dahl ground out in the first inning. In the second inning, German Márquez hit an RBI double, Blackmon singled to score Márquez & took second base on the throw home, and Trevor Story singled to drive in Blackmon. Mark Reynolds scored on a Blackmon ground-rule double in the third inning. Dahl scored on Ryan McMahon’s single and Ian Desmond scored on a sacrifice fly by Reynolds that turned into a double play when McMahon was thrown out at second base in the fourth inning. Desmond hit a grand slam home run in the fifth inning. In the seventh inning, a Dahl triple scored Story & Nolan Arenado and Desmond’s sacrifice fly drove in Dahl.
Márquez (7-3, 4.57) allowed seven runs in five innings on ten hits and four walks while striking out eight. Greg Garcia led off the game in the first inning with a double that was misplayed allowing Garcia to score, Eric Hosmer scored on a wild pitch to Manny Machado, and Machado scored on an Ian Kinsler single. Machado scored again in the third inning on another Kinsler single. Hosmer’s double in the sixth inning drove in Josh Naylor, Manuel Margot, and Garcia. Kinsler’s double in the seventh inning scored Wil Myers.
Machado was ejected for arguing a strike call by home plate umpire Bill Welke in the fifth inning. Pitcher Matt Strahm and manager Andy Green were thrown out in the sixth inning for yelling things from the dugout.
