The Padres (23-23) scored fewer runs than the Pittsburgh Pirates (23-20) in the third of four games at Petco Park, 7-2. Nick Margevicius (2-5, 4.96) allowed six runs in four innings on eight hits (four home runs) and a walk with two strikeouts. Josh Bell and Brian Reynolds hit back-to-back solo home runs in the second inning. Bell hit a three-run home run in the third inning. Gregory Polanco hit a solo home run in the fifth inning. Elias Diaz’ single scored Starling Marte in the ninth inning.
Montana DuRapau (0-0, 1.93) began the Pirates “Bullpen Day” with two shutout innings, giving up one hit and one walk while striking out four. Padres hitters struck out a total of thirteen times. Ian Kinsler scored on a single by Manny Machado in the third inning. Austin Allen’s single drove in Hunter Renfroe in the sixth inning.
