The Padres (65-49) defeated the Miami Marlins (47-66) in the first of three games at Petco Park by a score of 8-3. Joe Musgrove (8-7, 2.81) allowed one run on five hits and a walk with eight strikeouts in six innings. Lewis Brinson scored on a Magneuris Sierra single in the second inning. Brinson hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning.
Zach Thompson (2-5, 3.09) gave up four runs on four hits and four walks with two strikeouts in four innings. Eric Hosmer hit a solo home run in the second inning. Manny Machado singled in the third inning to drive in Tommy Pham. Hosmer scored on a Victor Caratini single and Trent Grisham scored on a Musgrove sacrifice fly in the fourth inning. In the eighth inning, Hosmer singled to drive in Machado, Grisham’s triple scored Hosmer & Wil Myers, and Grisham scored on a Caratini sacrifice fly.
