The Padres (38-40) scored fewer runs, 11-10 in eleven innings, than the Pittsburgh Pirates (36-40) in the finale of their three-game series at PNC Park. Joey Lucchesi (6-4, 3.95) gave up four runs on six hits and no walks with four strikeouts over five innings. Steven Brault’s single scored Jose Osuna and a sacrifice fly by Bryan Reynolds drove in Brault in the third inning. Josh Bell scored on Osuna’s single in the fourth inning. In the fifth inning, Jason Martin scored on Starling Marte’s sacrifice fly. Kevin Newman singled to drive in Elias Diaz, Reynolds drove in Adam Frazier with a single, and Newman scored on Melky Cabrera’s ground out to tie the game in the ninth inning. In the eleventh inning, Cabrera’s double drove in Reynolds, Bell & Cabrera scored on Jacob Stalling’s single, and Newman drew a bases-loaded walk-off walk.
Brault (3-1, 4.50) allowed three runs in five innings on six hits and three walks while striking out four. Fernando Tatis Jr. scored on a sacrifice fly to the second baseman (Yes, you read that right) by Hunter Renfroe in the first inning. In the fourth inning, Manuel Margot scored on Austin Hedges’ double and Hedges came home on a single by Tatis Jr. In the fifth inning, Tatis Jr’s single drove in Hedges and Eric Hosmer singled to drive in Tatis Jr. Manny Machado’s eighth inning single drove in Greg Garcia and Tatis Jr. Margot’s bunt single in the eleventh scored Machado & Hosmer and a Hedges single scored Renfroe & Margot.
