The Padres (18-16) scored fewer runs than the Los Angeles Dodgers (22-13) in the second game of three at Petco Park. Joey Lucchesi (3-2, 5.00) pitched five-plus innings, giving up three runs on five hits and two walk with two strikeouts. Chris Taylor drove in Alex Verdugo with a single in the second inning. In the sixth inning, Max Muncy hit a three-run home run, Matt Beaty’s single scored Verdugo, and Taylor came home on a Justin Turner ground out. Verdugo drew a bases-loaded walk in the ninth inning to drive in Turner for the go-ahead run.

Rich Hill (0-0, 3.60) allowed three runs on seven hits and a walk while striking out three over four-plus innings. Manny Machado hit a solo home run in the first inning. In the third inning, Ian Kinsler scored on Franmil Reyes’ sacrifice fly and Machado hit a second solo home run. In the sixth inning, Ty France’s double drove in Eric Hosmer, Kinsler was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded allowing France to score, and Machado drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Austin Hedges home.
