The Padres (51-38) were defeated by the Washington Nationals (42-43) in the third game of four at Petco Park by a score of 15-5. Chris Paddack (4-6, 5.40) allowed nine runs (eight earned) on nine hits and a walk with two strikeouts in two-plus innings. Juan Soto hit a three-run home run in the first inning. Alcides Escobar & Trea Turner scored on a Josh Bell single & Tommy Pham throwing error and a Starlin Castro single scored Soto & Bell in the second inning. Victor Robles doubled to drive in Josh Harrison and Robles scored on Escobar’s ground out in the third inning. Castro scored on a Harrison single in the fourth inning. In the eighth inning, Yan Gomes doubled to drive in Soto, Bell & Gomes scored on a double by Harrison, and Gerardo Parra‘s single drove in Harrison. Castro’s ninth inning ground out drove in Yadiel Hernandez.

Patrick Corbin (6-7, 5.40) gave up two runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out three over six innings. Pham scored on a single by Manny Machado in the fifth inning. Eric Hosmer hit a solo home run in the sixth inning. Trent Grisham hit a two-run home run with Pham on base and Victor Caratini singled to drive in Jorge Mateo in the ninth inning.
