The Padres (48-33) defeated the Cincinnati Reds (39-39) in the first game of three at Great American Ballpark by a score of 5-4. Craig Stammen (3-1, 2.89) started the game in place of Blake Snell, who was scratched due to illness. Stammen allowed one run on three hits and a walk with one strikeout over two innings. Jonathan India scored on a Tyler Stephenson single in the first inning. Joey Votto came home on a single by Shogo Akiyama in the fourth inning. Jesse Winker hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning.
Tony Santillan (1-2, 3.78) gave up three runs (two earned) on six hits and two walks while striking out four in three innings. Jake Cronenworth tripled to drive in Fernando Tatis Jr. and Cronenworth scored on a sacrifice fly by Manny Machado in the first inning. Eric Hosmer scored on Tommy Pham‘s sacrifice fly in the second inning. Pham led off the fourth inning with a solo home run and Trent Grisham singled to drive in Cronenworth.
