Sometimes things can get a little fuzzy after an entire year of watching baseball from anywhere other than the ballpark. The occasional memory refresher can come in handy. Here’s a reminder of what we may have missed while most of us were still staying at home.
The Padres (70-62) defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks (44-89) in the first of three games by a score of 7-5. Chris Paddack (7-6, 4.98) gave up one run on three hits and no walks with five strikeouts in four and two-thirds innings. A Craig Stammen wild pitch to pinch-hitter Jake McCarthy scored Daulton Varsho in the fifth inning. Ketel Marte hit a grand slam home run in the seventh inning.
Tyler Gilbert (1-2, 2.93) allowed five run (three earned) on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts in five innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run home run with Trent Grisham on base in the first inning. Wil Myers scored on an Austin Nola single and Nola scored on a bunt single by Grisham in the second inning. A single by Adam Frazier drove in Myers in the third inning. Eric Hosmer hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Manny Machado scored on Tatis Jr.’s double in the ninth inning.
