The Padres (62-49) were defeated by a score of 8-5 in the first game of three at Petco Park by the Arizona Diamondbacks (35-76). Ryan Weathers (4-4, 4.26) gave up six runs on seven hits and a walk with one strikeout in three-plus innings. Nick Ahmed singled to drive in Pavin Smith and Ahmed scored on a Ketel Marte single in the third inning. Carson Kelly scored on a Christian Walker single, Smith singled to drive in Asdrubal Cabrera, Matt Peacock singled to drive in Walker & Smith, and Ahmed drove in Jake Hager & Peacock with a single in the fourth inning.

Caleb Smith (3-8, 5.48) allowed five runs on three hits and six walks with two strikeouts in an inning-and-a-third. Trent Grisham hit a two-run home run with Austin Nola on base, Jake Cronenworth‘s double drove in Weathers & Tommy Pham, and Adam Frazier scored on a ground out by Wil Myers in the second inning.
