The Padres (2-1) scored more runs than the St Louis Cardinals (1-2), 4-0, in the finale of their best-of-three-games National League Wild Card series at Petco Park. The Padres won their first postseason series since 1998. Craig Stammen (0-0, 0.00) opened what turned out to be the third bullpen game in as many days with one and two-thirds inning of scoreless pitching, with one hit and no walks and no strikeouts. Tim Hill, Pierce Johnson, Adrian Morejon, Austin Adams, Luis Patiño, Emilio Pagán, Drew Pomeranz, and Trevor Rosenthal combined for the last seven and a third innings of shutout baseball. All told the Padres used twenty six pitchers in twenty seven innings of the series.

Jack Flaherty (0-1, 0.00) allowed one run on six hits and two walks while striking out eight over six innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. scored on a double by Eric Hosmer in the fifth inning. Manny Machado grounded into fielder’s choice that drove in Jake Cronenworth and Hosmer drew a bases-loaded walk that brought Trent Grisham home in the seventh inning. Cronenworth hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
