The Padres (0-1) scored fewer runs than the St Louis Cardinals (1-0) in their best-of-three National League Wild Card series at Petco Park, 7-4. Chris Paddack (0-1, 23.14) gave up six runs on eight hits and no walks with one strikeout in two and a third innings. Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run, Dylan Carson scored on a Yadier Molina single, and Molina came home on Matt Carpenter‘s sacrifice fly in the first inning. Paul DeJong singled to drive in Carlson and Carpenter singled to drive in Molina in the third inning. Dexter Fowler‘s single in the ninth inning drove in DeJong.
Kwang Hyun Kim (0-0, 7.36) allowed three runs on five hits and two walks while striking out two over three and two-thirds innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. scored on a sacrifice fly by Eric Hosmer in the first inning. Austin Nola‘s sacrifice fly in the second scored Jake Cronenworth. Tatis Jr. scored on a single by Tommy Pham in the third inning. Nola hit a sacrifice fly that drove in Pham in the sixth inning.
