The Padres (1-1) scored more runs, 11-9, than the St Louis Cardinals (1-1) in the second game of their best-of-three National League Wild Card series. Zach Davies (0-0, 18.00) gave up four runs on five hits and a walk with three strikeouts in two innings. Tommy Edman scored in the first inning on a Yadier Molina single. Matt Carpenter scored on Harrison Bader‘s single and Kolten Wong hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Dexter Fowler‘s double drove in Paul DeJong and Carpenter scored on a groundout by Wong in the sixth inning. Bader drove in Carpenter with a sacrifice fly and Fowler scored on Wong’s sacrifice fly in the eighth inning. Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run in the ninth inning.

Adam Wainwright (0-0, 5.40) allowed two runs on six hits and two walks with three strikeouts in three and a third innings. Eric Hosmer scored on a ground out by Wil Myers and Jake Cronenworth drew a bases-loaded walk to bring Mitch Moreland home in the fourth inning. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a two-run home run with Cronenworth on base and Manny Machado followed with a solo home run in the sixth inning. Myers hit a solo home run and Tatis Jr. hit another two-run home run with Austin Nola on base in the seventh inning. Myers hit a two-run home run with Jurickson Profar on base in the eighth inning.
