The Padres (67-77) scored more runs, 9-8 in ten innings, than the Chicago Cubs (77-67) in the second game of four at Petco Park. Ronald Bolaños (0-1, 5.73) allowed five runs on five hits and four walks with five strikeouts in five innings. Jason Heyward hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Heyward scored in the fourth inning after a challenge on an Ian Happ sacrifice fly. Kris Bryant hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning. Bryant hit another two-run home run and Heyward hit a solo home run in the eighth inning.
José Quintana (13-8, 4.15) gave up six runs (four earned) in three innings on seven hits and no walks with a strikeout. In the second inning, Eric Hosmer scored on a Luis Urías single, Wil Myers, Urías, & Austin Hedges scored when Bolaños hit into a fielder’s choice & Ben Zobrist throwing error, and Bolaños came home on Nick Martini‘s sacrifice fly. Ty France hit a solo home run in the third inning. Manuel Margot hit a triple to drive in Travis Jankowski and Margot scored on a single by Martini in the seventh inning. Margot drew a walk-off, bases-loaded walk in the tenth inning.
