The Padres (55-64) scored fewer runs than the Tampa Bay Rays (71-50), 7-5, in the second game of three at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (6-8, 4.55) allowed three runs on six hits and two walks with four strikeouts in five innings. Austin Meadows hit a solo home run in the first inning. Ji-Man Choi scored on Willy Adames‘ single in the second inning. Guillermo Heredia scored on a Meadows single in the fifth inning. Adames came home on a Craig Stammen fielding error of a Kevin Kiermaier fielder’s choice in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, Choi hit a two-run home run and Eric Sogard doubled to drive in Adames.

Brendan McKay (2-2, 5.08) gave up four runs on five hits and six walks while striking out seven in four innings. Eric Hosmer doubled to drive in Wil Myers and Luis Urías doubled to drive in Hunter Renfroe, Hosmer, & Manuel Margot in the first inning. Urías singled in the eighth inning to drive in Margot.

Padres hitters struck out a total of eighteen times in the game. And Fernando Tatís Jr. left after striking out in the sixth inning with what described as lower back spasms.
