The Padres (55-41) were defeated by the Washington Nationals (43-49) in the finale of their three-game series at Nationals Park by a score of 8-7. Joe Musgrove (5-7, 3.14) gave up four runs on eight hits and two walks with three strikeouts in five innings. Trea Turner scored on a Josh Bell ground out, Juan Soto scored on Josh Harrison‘s double, Andrew Stevenson singled to drive in Harrison, and Tres Barrera‘s single scored Stevenson in the third inning. Alcides Escobar hit a solo home run and Soto hit a two-run home run in the eighth inning. Barrera scored on an Escobar single in the ninth inning.
Max Scherzer (7-4, 2.83) allowed four runs on four hits and three walks while striking out eight over seven innings. Eric Hosmer hit a three-run home run with Manny Machado & Tommy Pham on base in the fourth inning. Jurickson Profar hit a solo home run in the seventh inning. Machado hit a two-run home run with Fernando Tatis Jr. on base in the eighth inning. Jorge Mateo scored on a Trent Grisham single in the ninth inning.
