The Padres (76-74) were defeated by the San Francisco Giants (98-53) in the first of three games at Petco Park by a score of 6-5. Joe Musgrove (11-9, 3.15) allowed five runs on eight hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five and two-thirds innings. Tommy La Stella hit a solo home run in the first inning. Evan Longoria scored on a Wilmer Flores single and Buster Posey‘s sacrifice fly scored Mike Yastrzemski in the fifth inning. Brandon Crawford doubled to drive in Kris Bryant and a Yastrzemski sacrifice fly scored Crawford in the sixth inning. LaMonte Wade Jr. single to drive in Brandon Belt in the ninth inning.
Kevin Gausman (14-6, 2.92) gave up four runs on nine hits and no walks while striking out three in four innings. Manny Machado hit a solo home run in the first inning. Trent Grisham scored on a single by Fernando Tatis Jr. in the second inning. Machado and Tommy Pham hit solo home runs in the third inning. Austin Nola hit a solo home run in the sixth inning.
