The Padres (6-4) scored fewer runs than the St Louis Cardinals (4-5), 4-1, in the finale of their three-game series at Busch Stadium. Matt Strahm (0-2, 7.04) pitched five innings, surrendering two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out two. Paul DeJong hit a two-run double in the fourth inning that brought Matt Carpenter and Paul Goldschmidt across the plate. Kolten Wong scored on Carpenter’s sacrifice fly in the seventh inning. Wong bunted for a hit in the eighth inning to drive in Yadier Molina.
Adam Wainwright (1-0, 4.50) gave up one run in six innings on five hits and no walks with nine strikeouts. Manuel Margot scored on a Eric Hosmer single in the third inning.
