This Year’s Five-Win Pass Is Another Bad Padres Idea In the Long, Sad History of Bad Padres Ideas

I wasn’t going to bother with this. I really wasn’t.

I was going to just do like the Padres did and let it go without any real fanfare. Just a tweet.

That’s really all the Padres had to say about it. I didn’t see any ads during games beforehand. Shoot, I didn’t even see one during the game this morning. Which, if you know anything about the Padres history of promoting things during games, seemed odd.

I wasn’t going to buy one, so I figured I would just let it go after getting in a parting shot.

However, Padres Twitter had other plans.

At first, it was just the usual reaction of “What the hell is this?” that comes with just about anything the Padres do lately.

But Corey was having NONE OF IT. None at all.

Looking closer at the deal (and HJ Preller [RIP, Padres Jagoff]’s summary of it from last year), I noticed it wasn’t quite the same thing.

Last year’s pass had Seat Upgrade credits included:

Fans receive a ticket for the first game of their pass, beginning on July 27, and every subsequent Padres home game until they have claimed tickets for five home victories or until September 30, whichever happens first. Passes purchased on or after July 27 will be delivered tickets for the next home game occurring at least 24 hours after the purchase.

Your tickets will be delivered digitally and can be managed in the MLB Ballpark app. Exact seat locations will vary by game and delivered four hours prior to first pitch. The Padres Five-Win Pass is on sale until September 2 and a limited number are available, so get yours today!

Padres Five-Win Pass seats are located in Left Field Upper Reserved with overflow seating in Upper Infield except for September 1 due to seat inventory constraints. Overflow seating for Saturday, September 1 will be in Right Field Lower Reserved. Seating location will depend on how fast you claim your tickets for a designated game and seat inventory availability.

This year? No credits. Weird. At least none that I can find without purchasing one. And, like I said, that ain’t happening.

There was also this little nugget thrown in there:

Exact seat locations will vary by game and delivered four hours prior to first pitch.

What?

Padres Five-Win Pass seats are located in Left Field Upper Reserved with overflow seating in Upper Infield except for September 1 due to seat inventory constraints. Overflow seating for Saturday, September 1 will be in Right Field Lower Reserved. Seating location will depend on how fast you claim your tickets for a designated game and seat inventory availability.

Oh, so the tickets are pretty much just underneath the big scoreboard and you don’t get any choice as to where your seats will be. Okay.

But, what if you and 3 friends decide you want to get in on this?

You may purchase up to eight (8) passes for you and your friends and family. Be sure to purchase all of your passes in one transaction if you want to sit together.

Better make sure Jimmy hasn’t maxed out his VISA card, otherwise you’re all screwed.

Face it, Padres, this was a bad idea when you tried it last year. Yet, somehow, you managed to make it even worse.

And before you start screaming at me about how it’s now two months instead of one, let me remind you that last year the Padres won five out of the first nine home games in June. That’s right, it was over that quickly.

Now, ask yourself this: Can this Padres team win five games in two months?

Dammit.
