The Padres (41-40) scored more runs than the St Louis Cardinals (40-40), 3-1, in the first of three games at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (5-7, 4.22) threw 98 pitches in four innings, giving up a run on six hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Yadier Molina scored on Michael Wacha‘s single in the fourth inning.
Wacha (5-4, 5.30) allowed two runs on six hits and a walk with two strikeouts in seven innings. Fernando Tatis Jr. and Eric Hosmer hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning. Wil Myers scored on Hosmer’s ground out in the eighth inning.
