The Padres (69-85) scored no runs compared to the nine scored by the Jingle Bells of Arizona (79-75) in the first game of their three-game series at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (8-10, 4.53) allowed two runs on two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in six innings. Carson Kelly hit a bases-loaded single in the second innings that drove in Christian Walker & Wilmer Flores. In the eighth inning, Walker scored on a Adam Jones single, Abraham Almonte drew a bases-loaded walk bringing Jones home, Josh Rojas doubled with the bases loaded to drive in Nick Ahmed, C. Kelly, & Almonte, and Flores singled with the bases loaded to score Rojas & Eduardo Escobar.

Merrill Kelly (12-14, 4.31) shut the Padres out over seven innings on two hits and three walks while striking out nine.

Always tough to figure Lauer. He struggled at times to throw strikes but wound up going six innings and allowing only two hits and two runs … and it might have been different had Garcia not thrown late to second in the second. Struck out nine, walked four.
