The Padres (69-85) scored no runs compared to the nine scored by the Jingle Bells of Arizona (79-75) in the first game of their three-game series at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (8-10, 4.53) allowed two runs on two hits and four walks with nine strikeouts in six innings. Carson Kelly hit a bases-loaded single in the second innings that drove in Christian Walker & Wilmer Flores. In the eighth inning, Walker scored on a Adam Jones single, Abraham Almonte drew a bases-loaded walk bringing Jones home, Josh Rojas doubled with the bases loaded to drive in Nick Ahmed, C. Kelly, & Almonte, and Flores singled with the bases loaded to score Rojas & Eduardo Escobar.

Merrill Kelly (12-14, 4.31) shut the Padres out over seven innings on two hits and three walks while striking out nine.
