Darren Smith & Jomboy on old/new media

At the #WinterMeetings2019, I caught up with San Diego radio host Darren Smith and social media content creator Jomboy for their thoughts on the differences between “old media” and “new media.” I also asked whether they think the lines are blurring.

First, we hear from Darren.

Next, here’s Jomboy:

Darren Smith

Smith is a radio host for @XTRA1360 and @KOGORadio in San Diego. He has been a prominent voice in San Diego sports radio since 2004, hosting a variety of afternoon shows on The Mighty 1090 AM.

Prior to his broadcast career on the west coast, Smith spent time at ESPN Radio in Bristol, CT (1998-2002), where he helped launch ESPN’s 24-hour format and produced several different programs, including The Dan Patrick Show.

Jimmy “Jomboy” O’Brien

O’Brien has a history degree from Central Connecticut State. He is the creator of several podcasts including “Talkin’ Yanks.” O’Brien’s former jobs have included rounding up Bird scooters and working as an events videographer. He launched Jomboy Media with Jake Storiale in 2018.

O’Brien’s video breakdowns related to the 2017 Houston Astros cheating scandal have been called “damning evidence that essentially does the work for MLB’s investigative division.” [The Athletic, 11/22/19]

Jomboy’s videos and narration of humorous baseball moments are available on YouTube and Twitter.
