The Padres (30-29) scored fewer runs, 9-3, than the Miami Marlins (21-36) in the finale of their three-game series at Petco Park. Matt Strahm (2-5, 4.03) pitched four and a third innings, giving up seven runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out five. Jorge Alfaro hit a two-run home run in the second inning. Garrett Cooper hit a solo home run in the third inning. Alfaro’s double in the fourth inning scored two. In the fifth inning, Starlin Castro hit an RBI double and Harold Ramirez singled to drive in Castro.

Trevor Richards (3-5, 3.53) shut the Padres out over five innings on one hit and two walks with eight strikeouts. Hunter Renfroe hit two home runs; a solo shot in the seventh inning and a two-run blast in the ninth inning.

There was a 28-minute delay in the third inning because a swarm of bees descended upon the first base FOX Sports San Diego field microphone.
