The Padres (11-5) scored more runs than the Jingle Bells of Arizona (6-9), 5-4, in the third game of their four-game series at Chase Field. Matt Strahm (0-2, 4.26) pitched five shutout innings with four hits and no walks while striking out four. Gerardo Reyes was charged with all four of the Jingle Bells’ runs in a third of an inning of relief in the sixth inning. David Peralta scored on a Nick Ahmed single. Carson Kelly hit a double to drive in Eduardo Escobar. Craig Stammen came in to pitch and Ahmed scored on Ildemaro Vargas’ groundout. Adam Jones hit a single to bring Kelly home.

Merrill Kelly (1-1, 3.79) gave up four runs on eight hits and a walk with five strikeouts in five innings pitched. Eric Hosmer hit a single in the first inning to drive in Manuel Margot and Manny Machado. Hosmer was called out at second as he tried to stretch it into a double, but the call was overturned on review. Fernando Tatis Jr. hit a 2-run home run in the third inning. Franmil Reyes hit a solo home run in the seventh inning for the go-ahead run.
