The Padres (19-13) scored more runs, 10-7, than the Seattle Mariners (12-20) in the second game of their three-game Vedder Cup series at Petco Park. The game was the first of a doubleheader and — under 2020 rules — both games were considered final after seven innings instead of nine.

Dinelson Lamet (2-1, 2.35) allowed three runs on five hits and three walks with six strikeouts in five innings. José Marmolejos hit a two-run home run and Jake Fraley scored on a single by Shed Long Jr. in the fourth inning. In the seventh inning, Dee Gordon scored on a Sam Haggerty single, Kyle Lewis singled to drive in J.P. Crawford, Haggerty scored on a single by Kyle Seager, and Lewis came home on Austin Nola‘s sacrifice fly.

Ljay Newsome (0-0, 2.57) got the start for the Mariners because their originally projected starter, Taijuan Walker, was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays before the game. Newsome pitched four innings, giving up one run on three hits and no walks while striking out four. Manny Machado hit a solo home run in the fourth inning. Fernando Tatís Jr. and Machado hit back-to-back solo home runs in the sixth inning. In the seventh inning, Machado singled with the bases loaded to drive in Austin Hedges & Trent Grisham, Tatís Jr. scored on a wild pitch by Taylor Williams, Machado scored on Eric Hosmer‘s single, and Wil Myers hit a walk-off three-run home run with Hosmer & Jake Cronenworth on base.
