The Padres (33-32) scored fewer runs than the Washington Nationals (29-35), 4-1, in the third game of their four-game series at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (5-5, 4.14) allowed four runs (three earned) in seven innings on seven hits and three walks with five strikeouts. Howie Kendrick drove in Adam Eaton with a single in the first inning. Brian Dozier hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning. Trea Turner scored on Anthony Rendon’s single in the fifth inning.

Max Scherzer (4-5, 2.83) shut out the Friars over seven innings on six hits and a walk while striking out nine. Josh Naylor scored the lone Padres run on an Austin Allen single in the ninth inning.
