The Padres (26-24) scored more runs than the Jingle Bells of Arizona (25-25), 5-3, completing a three-game series sweep — their first sweep of the season — at Petco Park. Eric Lauer (3-4, 4.73) pitched seven innings, giving up one run on four hits and no walk while striking out seven. Eduardo Escobar doubled in the sixth inning to drive in Ketel Marte. Escobar drove in Marte again with a single in the ninth inning.
Merrill Kelly (4-5, 4.75) lasted just one and two-thirds innings, allowing four runs on five hits and four walks with no strikeouts. In the first inning, Eric Hosmer hit a two-run single to drive in Greg Garcia & Franmil Reyes and Ty France double to drive in Hosmer. Garcia scored on a Manny Machado sacrifice fly in the second inning. Austin Hedges scored in the third inning on Garcia’s single.
