The Padres (68-78) scored fewer runs than the Chicago Cubs (78-68), 4-1, in the finale of their four game series at Petco Park. Dinelson Lamet (2-5, 4.06) allowed three runs on four hits and two walks with seven strikeouts in five innings. Anthony Rizzo scored on Kris Bryant‘s sacrifice fly in the first inning. Ian Happ hit a two-run single in the fourth inning to drive in Kyle Schwarber & Bryant. Jason Heyward scored on a ground out by Ben Zobrist in the seventh inning.

Yu Darvish (6-6, 3.97) shut out the Padres over six innings on two hits and two walks while striking out fourteen. Padres’ batters struck out a total of nineteen times. Manny Machado was hit by a pitch in a ninth inning pinch-hit appearance with the bases loaded and Nick Martini scored the Padres’ only run.
